FREE! Step-by-Step Marketing Plan to Grow Your Therapy Practice
Building a private practice doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Like any big goal, marketing your practice is best tackled one step at a time. These three steps are designed to help you build a sustainable practice, starting with getting full and growing beyond into something that reflects your unique goals, whether that’s expanding your impact, building authority, or simply enjoying the work you do.
Why These Steps Work: The Essentials Of A Thriving Practice
In the 10 years I’ve spent helping therapists grow their practices, I’ve asked the same question over and over again: What’s working in your marketing?
And you know what I hear, without fail, from hundreds of therapists? “Psychology Today and referrals.” That’s it. Psychology Today and referrals. Time and time again, those two things come up, no matter the therapist, no matter the specialty.
I’ve learned that these two elements, your online presence and your referral network, are the bedrock of any thriving solo practice. In fact, I’ve never met a successful practice that didn’t have these two things in place. (Okay, maybe one super-nerdy therapist who was so antisocial, they built their practice solely through SEO and Google Ads—but that’s truly the exception, not the rule.)
So, when I created these steps, I kept that in mind. These steps focus on the essentials, the two tactics that can build a full practice for you. Once you’ve got your online presence and referral network in place, then you can explore other strategies that align with your bigger goals. But trust me, it all starts here.
These steps are designed to keep things simple. No distractions. Just a focus on what works. They’re efficient, fast, and effective. Stop wasting your precious time on marketing tactics that aren’t aligned with your goals. Stick to these steps, and you’ll start seeing real results.
When you focus on these two key ingredients everything else falls into place.
Master Each Step Before Moving On
If you’re just getting started, don’t skip ahead, complete each step before moving on to the next. Think of it as laying a strong foundation before adding the next layer. By giving the step you’re on your full focus, you’ll be spending your time on what actually matters. Here’s how to tell where you are in the process and what to focus on at each stage.
Step 1: Create a Professional Online Presence
The first step to marketing your therapy practice is establishing an online presence. Potential clients need to know you exist and how to find you.
- What to Do:
- Set up profiles on key therapy directories like Psychology Today, TherapyDen, or GoodTherapy.
- Create a Google My Business profile to appear in local searches.
- Optional: Build a simple website with your name, specialties, and contact information.
- Extra credit: Get featured in a reputable online publication with either a guest post or interview.
- Signs You’re in This Step:
- You don’t yet have an online presence or directory profile.
- Potential clients can’t easily find information about your services.
- Your practice website (if you have one since it’s optional) doesn’t look professional, lacks key details, or is out of date.
Step 2: Build A Referral Network
Once your online presence is set, focus on building connections with those that can refer clients to you and on streamlining your processes to do so. You’ll also need a way to measure your results. Referrals are the most reliable way to grow your practice.
- What to Do:
- Start networking with other therapists, health and wellness providers, and anyone unique to your niche that could potentially send clients your way.
- Stay in touch with referral sources by nurturing connection, expressing gratitude, and providing updates when appropriate.
- Set up a method to track how clients are finding you (e.g., through asking how clients found you in intake forms and regularly loading that insight into a spreadsheet)
- Signs You’re in This Step:
- You’re not consistently getting referrals.
- You’re getting some referrals, but you’re inconsistent about maintaining those connections.
- You haven’t tracked how clients are finding you and aren’t sure if it’s your online presence or networking efforts that are paying off.
- You want to be more efficient with the types of people you are networking with.
Step 3: Go Beyond a Full Practice
Once your practice is consistently full, it’s time to explore ways to grow or diversify your impact. This step is all about deciding what comes next for your business while still maintaining your online presence and referral network (so think of it as an add on, not alternative).
- Chose a growth path and implement
- Make more money in less time: consider offering groups, workshops, intensives, or online programs to expand your reach.
- Make your expertise more accessible: Share free content on platforms like YouTube, create affordable e-books, or develop low-cost programs to make your expertise more accessible.
- Focus on sustainability: by investing in long-term marketing strategies like SEO or automation.
- Explore activities that bring you joy: (and contribute to the visibility of your practice) such as writing blogs, hosting webinars, and beyond.
- Build authority to raise your rates: if you become an authority in your specialization, you can command much higher rates. Getting featured in the media, publishing articles, writing a book, or collaborating with other professionals are examples of what can build authority.
- Expand to group practice: Consider growing your practice by adding clinicians to your team. This allows you to serve more clients and create additional revenue streams while sharing your knowledge and systems with other therapists.
- Signs You’re in This Step:
- Your practice is consistently full, and you have a waitlist.
- You feel ready to expand your offerings or reach more people.
- You want to focus on sustainability or marketing activities that bring you joy.
- You’re ready to take actionable steps toward your next big goal.
