The State of Therapy 2024: A Year of Strength and Change

As 2024 comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the journey this year has taken us on. It’s been a year of contrasts for many therapists—some have held steady, others have felt overwhelmed, and many have faced new challenges that have shaped their practices.

The economic realities of high inflation have introduced pressures, particularly with a wave of clients turning to insurance options more than before. Meanwhile, technological advancements, especially the rise of AI, have entered the therapy space—creating both opportunities and uncertainties.

Yet, through it all, one thing remains constant: the therapist community’s unwavering commitment to learning and growth. Therapists have continued to embrace new modalities, deepen their skills, and show up for their clients with resilience. It’s inspiring to witness how, despite the ups and downs, therapists remain dedicated to their work and the people they serve.

The State of Therapy: Economic Pressures, Technology, and Resilience

2024 has been a year of navigating both challenges and growth in the therapy field. Let’s take a closer look at some of the key factors shaping the current state of therapy:

Economic Pressures and the Shift to Insurance

The financial pressures of inflation have been hard on many therapy practices this year. We’re seeing a noticeable shift as more clients turn to insurance to help cover their therapy costs, which has created new challenges for therapists who rely on cash pay. While this shift opens up access to therapy for some clients, it’s also left many therapists facing slower schedules and tighter finances.

For some seasoned practitioners, this shift has meant rethinking their business and marketing strategies. Some are doubling down on marketing to attract more clients, while others are raising rates to make up the difference. Some have found that embracing a more specialized niche or offering unique services helps them stand out and compete for the fewer—but still present—cash pay clients.

Online Therapy: Cemented as a Permanent Part of the Therapy Landscape

One of the most significant changes this year has been the continued rise of online therapy. What began as a temporary solution during the COVID-19 pandemic has now become an established and permanent part of the therapy landscape. Many therapists have found that online therapy continues to offer unmatched flexibility and convenience for clients—allowing them to access care from the comfort of their homes, no matter their location.

For therapists, online therapy provides a valuable opportunity to expand their reach across multiple states of licensure or operate without the overhead costs of maintaining a physical office. Online therapy has proven to be a lasting form of therapy in modern mental health care.

The Rise of AI in Therapy

2024 also marked a year of technological exploration, with AI tools making their full way into the therapy space. While some therapists are excited by the possibilities these tools offer, others are (very rightfully) wary of the ethical concerns, particularly surrounding client privacy. AI may assist in tasks like administrative work, notes, or even client data analysis, but it remains to be seen how it will truly impact the therapy process in the long run.

For now, therapists are approaching AI with caution, but also an openness to finding ways it can enhance their practice in ethically sound ways.

Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy: A New Frontier

One of the most exciting developments in therapy this year has been the increased visibility and research into psychedelic-assisted therapy. With the FDA approving trials and research advancing, more therapists are beginning to support psychedelics as part of treatment plans for mental health issues such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

While it’s still a growing part of the field with many unknowns, the rising interest in psychedelics represents a shift toward alternative therapies that complement traditional methods. For therapists open to these approaches, it’s an opportunity to be at the forefront of a potential revolution in mental health treatment. However, this trend is also raising questions about regulation, safety, and ethics that will need to be addressed as integration of psychedelics continues.

Examples Of Therapist Resilience and Courage

Amidst all the changes, I continue to be in awe of the therapist community’s fortitude. I’ve seen firsthand how therapists continue to rise to the occasion, showing immense courage in both their personal and professional lives:

  • A therapist who launched their first website, carving out a space for an underserved niche.
  • A social worker who raised their rates, despite struggling with the belief that they deserved it.
  • Another therapist overcame vulnerability and fear to record a 15-second video for their Psychology Today profile.
  • Many have taken the courageous leap to move off insurance, creating practices that better align with their vision.
  • And countless others have faced the unique struggles of private practice with courage.

This resilience is truly remarkable, and it inspires me every day.

Personal Learnings: Embracing Change And Finding Strength in Uncertainty

This year, I’ve had my own journey of learning and growth, and I’m sure some of it will resonate with you. I’ve learned that embracing change isn’t just about managing it—it’s about allowing it to shift me, too. Moving back to California after 15 years abroad was a massive transition, one that involved letting go of the familiarity of my life in Greece and stepping into the unknown of a new chapter.

As much as I wanted the change to feel exciting, it was mostly distressing. What saved me were the glimmers—those small moments of beauty, connection, and peace that ground me in the present and send a signal to my nervous system “I am safe now.”

These glimmers, whether found in nature, in the laughter of new friends, or in quiet moments of stillness, have taught me how to stay return home to self during times of upheaval. Even in periods of transition, I am here with me.

For therapists, this might resonate with the changes you’ve faced in your practice this year—whether it’s adapting to new technology, shifting financial realities, or embracing new approaches to care. Change often brings challenges, but it also brings opportunities for growth and deeper self connection.

Looking Ahead: A Wish for 2025

As we look ahead to 2025, I wish for all of you the strength to continue showing up—not just for your clients, but for yourselves. The work you do is extraordinary AND you are worthy of love and care beyond what you do for others.

I’ve witnessed the challenges and growth that have marked this year, and I know there is so much more to come. In 2025, I hope you continue to embrace the incredible work you do while also remembering to nurture and care for yourself along the way.

Love you! Thank you for being you. Here’s to a new year of growth.

With gratitude,
Kat
